805.01 - Naming School Buildings and Facilities

The Board of Directors believes that the names of district buildings and facilities should have special significance to the community, its traditions, and values.

The school buildings will be defined as any building owned and operated by the Maquoketa Valley School District. For the purposes of this policy, a facility is defined as a building, stadium, field, campus, or major component thereof. A subunit is a gymnasium, media center, auditorium, cafeteria, student commons, or similar areas.

The Board of Directors believes that naming a school facility is a matter of importance that deserves thoughtful attention. The naming of buildings and other facilities in the District provides an opportunity to recognize the contributions of individuals or groups to education and to the life of our community or to recognize the significance of the neighborhood area or community in which the school resides. Special consideration will be given to names that have special meaning to the students and citizens and that will enhance the education and moral values of the particular school or subunit. The Board will not be influenced in its decision by personal prejudice or favoritism, political pressure, or temporary popularity of a name.

When a request to name a school building or facility is made, the Superintendent will review the request and make a decision regarding recommendation to the Board of Education.  Upon receipt of a recommendation by the Board of Education, the Board of Education will make a decision based upon the information presented and the long-term interests of the school system.
